This is also known as a“Personal Statement” or “Personal Essay”.
Over 750 colleges accept The Common Application, and along with it, The Common App Essay.
The Common Application allows students to choose from seven prompts for the essay.
Having a choice allows all applicants, regardless of background, the opportunity to best represent themselves by sharing their individual voice through the prompt that most resonates with him/her.
If you are using The Common App, you will have a minimum of 250 words and a maximum of 650 words to respond to one of the following prompts listed in this link:

These colleges will have a "Primary Essay" or "Long Essay" unique to them.
The Universal College Application (Universal College App) is another portal by which you can apply to college and submit essays. While the Common Application is managed by a nonprofit, is the Universal Application is managed by a for-profit company. Less than 50 colleges accept the Universal College Application.
